Lilongwe, Malawi 23rd November, 2022 (AEJ) – The AUDA-NEPAD Center for Rural Resources Systems team is conducting a sensitization workshop on genome editing applications in agriculture in Lilongwe, Malawi with scientists, researchers and the academia in the sector of environment and natural resources management.
Genome editing is a set of molecular biology techniques that allow researchers to delete or silence specific genes, or otherwise manipulate genomes of living organisms, to address challenges in agriculture and other sectors such as health.
Genes that express undesired traits in an organism are deleted or silenced with these technologies.
Wolde Sinebo Senior Programme Officer and Silas Obukosia who is Coordinator of the AUDA-NEPAD Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya are facilitating the sensitization to unpack the existing and emerging technologies to boost agriculture productivity with different science institutions in Malawi.
They are expected to launch guidelines and genome editing, safety assessment of food and feed derived from genetically modified crops including guidelines in assessment of GMO which is expected to be presided over by the Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change in Malawi.
