Why Green Media Awards?
The motivation is to promote and sustain media coverage on the environment in Malawi and accelerate the agenda for sustainable utilization of Malawi’s natural resources.

Eligibility
All journalists practising in Malawi are eligible to apply, however, AEJ members will have an added advantage. Each Journalist is eligible to submit a minimum of two stories per category for a maximum of three categories.

Language
The jury will entertain materials in English and Chichewa only.

Foundation Raising Funds To Clean Up Dedza Mountain

In a quest to conserve the environment, Chifuno Changa Green Initiative has intensified efforts in addressing challenges that communities in the country are sailing through as a result of environmental mismanagement.

Currently, the organization has embarked on a clean up campaign aimed at raising funds to help enforcement of proper waste disposal.

Speaking in Dedza district on the sidelines of a 21 kilometer run challenge, Chifuno Changa Green Initiative founder Chifuno Stevens expressed optimism that the initiative will help in raising awareness among concerned stakeholders on the importance of conserving the environment.

"As Chifuno Changa, we understand that such initiatives are key to ending challenges that communities are facing due to impacts of climate change that are among others due to environmental mismanagement. We are therefore hoping that the run challenge like this will bring to attention our local leaders as well as the government on what they should start doing in environmental management," said Stevens.

On this note, she pointed out the need for the country to embrace multi sectoral collaboration in a bid to manage the challenges that she said are as a result of improper waste management.

Trash dumped on the foot of Dedza mountain

Speaking in a separate interview, one of the country's environmental activists Mathews Malata hailed the initiative whilst appealing government to put up mechanisms that would help councils to have functional landfills.

"Let me commend what Chifuno Changa is implementing, you might be aware that our councils are facing challenges in as far as waste management is concerned. So I would like to appeal to the government to make sure it puts in place mechanisms that would enforce proper waste disposal," said Malata.

In response, Dedza District Commissioner Emmanuel Bulukutu said the council has identified a new dump site saying the old one was affecting tourists who visit Dedza mountain reserve.

"As a district council, we thought to be part of what Chifuno Changa is implementing because it is in one way complementing the government reforms. We have already identified a new dump site at Kaboola village. The old dump site was lowering economic activities in the district as the tourism sector was much affected. We are therefore appealing to our residents to stop dumping the wastes in the mountain," said Bulukutu.

Through the initiative, Chifuno Changa Green Initiative has mobilised about four hundred thousand Kwacha and is planning to take the initiative to other districts of the country.
