President Lazarus Chakwera has thrown his weight behind the nationwide ban on thin plastics adopted to keep Malawi clean.
The President dialled up the prohibition during a weekly press briefing at Kamuzu Palace on Monday.
He stated: “I am especially keen to see that the ban on thin plastics is fully implemented for Malawi to regain its beauty.
“This will take a concerted effort by all stakeholders, from manufacturers of plastics, producers of environmentally friendly carrying and packaging materials, local authorities, and the general public. I call on all private business operators to find alternative carrier bags that are environmentally friendly.”
Chakwera becomes the first President to back the crackdown opposed by plastic manufacturers contrary to the Supreme Court ruling. His predecessor Peter Mutharika was publicly photographed shopping using the banned plastic carrier bags.
Chakwera plans to announce a National Cleanup Day similar to Rwanda Umuganda, where everyone is required to participate in the initiative on the last Saturday of every month. He also warned against poor waste management fuelling water pollution and flooding in cities.
